4th of July Jello Shots (Vodka Jello Shots)
Whether you're hosting a backyard BBQ or bringing a tray to a friend's cookout, this recipe makes 40–50 mini shots - just the thing for celebrating in style.
Course: Dessert, Drinks
Cuisine: American
Servings: 40 - 50 mini shots
Author: Chop and Cheers
Blue Layer (bottom)
- 1 box 3 oz blue Jell-O (berry blue)
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup cold water
- ½ cup vodka
White Layer (middle)
- 2 packets unflavored gelatin
- ½ cup cold water
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 can 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
- Optional: Up to ½ cup vodka for a boozier version
Red Layer (top)
- 1 box 3 oz red Jell-O (cherry or strawberry)
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup cold water
- ½ cup vodka
Garnish
- Whipped cream
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles
Make the Blue Layer (Bottom)
Dissolve the blue Jell-O in 1 cup of hot water (not boiling, to preserve gelatin strength). Stir until fully dissolved.
Stir in ½ cup cold water and ½ cup vodka. Let the mixture cool slightly - hot liquid can crack plastic shot glasses.
Fill each 1 oz shot glass 1/3 full with the blue mixture.
Place on a tray and chill in the fridge until just set - about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Make the White Layer (Middle)
Sprinkle 2 packets of unflavored gelatin over ½ cup cold water and let bloom for 5 minutes.
Add 1 cup boiling water and stir until gelatin dissolves completely.
Mix in the sweetened condensed milk. Optional: add up to ½ cup vodka (but don’t exceed this or it may not set).
Let the mixture cool to room temperature before pouring to avoid melting the blue layer.
Fill each shot glass another third of the way with the white mixture. Chill until set - again, about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Make the Red Layer (Top)
Dissolve red Jell-O in 1 cup hot water, stir well.
Add ½ cup cold water and ½ cup vodka, then let cool slightly.
Carefully pour the red mixture over the set white layer, leaving a little room at the top for garnish.
Chill for at least 2–3 hours, or overnight for best results.
Garnish and Serve
Just before serving, top each shot with whipped cream and patriotic sprinkles.
Keep the shots refrigerated until you’re ready to serve - they’ll soften quickly in warm weather.
Before You Start:
- Clear space in your fridge—you’ll need room for a tray of 40–50 shots.
- Use a tray to move your shots easily from counter to fridge without spills.
- Use a pour-spout bowl or measuring cup to make filling each layer clean and simple.
More Tips:
- Keep colors clean: Pour slowly and steadily to prevent the layers from mixing. A spoon can help break the pour.
- In a rush? Speed things up by adding a few ice cubes to the cold water in each layer.
- Vodka tips: Regular vodka works great - no need to splurge. Want a twist? Try citrus- or berry-flavored vodka.
