Patriotic Popcorn with M&Ms
This Patriotic Popcorn with M&Ms is the ultimate sweet-and-salty treat. It’s easy to make, endlessly customizable, and perfect for sharing. Plus, it looks as good as it tastes - thanks to vibrant candy melts, starry sprinkles, and a generous handful of red, white, and blue M&Ms.
Course: Dessert, Snack
Cuisine: American
Servings: 6 - 8 cups
Author: Chop and Cheers
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
- 1/4 cup red candy melts
- 1/4 cup white candy melts
- 1/4 cup blue candy melts
- 1/4 cup M&Ms preferably red, white, and blue
- 1 tbsp sprinkles stars and stripes themed if available
Pop the Corn
Air Popper Method: Use an air popper and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Before starting, gently shake the kernels inside to distribute them evenly - this helps ensure more even popping and fewer unpopped duds.
Microwave Method: Add popcorn kernels to a brown paper bag, fold the top down a few times to seal, and microwave for 2–3 minutes. Listen closely - stop when popping slows to about 5 seconds between pops.
Stovetop Option (for extra flavor): Heat 1–2 tablespoons of vegetable or coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the kernels, cover, and shake the pot frequently until popping slows.
Pro Tip: Always sift through the popcorn afterward and remove any unpopped kernels. No one likes a surprise crunch that isn’t crunchy in a good way.
Melt the Candy
Place red, white, and blue candy melts in three separate microwave-safe bowls. Microwave each on 50% power for one minute. Stir, then continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
If the candy melts are too thick to drizzle, stir in a teaspoon of vegetable oil or shortening to thin them out. Transfer each color to a small piping bag (or a zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off) for easy drizzling.
Tip: If the melts start to harden mid-decorating, pop them back in the microwave for a quick 10-second burst.
Assemble the Popcorn
Spread your popped popcorn on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Drizzle each color of candy melt over the popcorn. For a more eye-catching look, drizzle one color at a time and let it set for a minute before adding the next.
Optional but fun: Toss the popcorn gently between colors using a spatula or gloved hands to get a more even, layered effect.
Before the candy melts set, sprinkle on the M&Ms and decorative sprinkles so they stick.
Want more texture? Throw in chopped pretzels, peanuts, or cashews for that satisfying crunch.
Let It Set
Leave the popcorn at room temperature for 15–20 minutes to let the candy melts harden. If you’re in a hurry, pop the tray in the fridge for 10 minutes - but cover it loosely with plastic wrap to avoid condensation ruining your candy.
To test if it’s ready, gently touch a drizzle of candy - it should feel firm and dry.
Note: Avoid setting it in a humid environment, as that can make the candy melts sticky.
Bonus Ideas & Variations
- Storage Tip: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temp for up to 3 days. The crunch stays best if the container is tightly sealed.
- Gifting Idea: Package in clear bags tied with patriotic ribbons for adorable party favors or hostess gifts!
- Flavor Boost: Sprinkle a touch of sea salt or cinnamon sugar over the popcorn before drizzling for a salty-sweet or warm, cozy twist.
- Candy Swap: Use red, white, and blue chocolate chips or Sixlets instead of M&Ms.
- Add Some Sparkle: Edible glitter or shimmer sprinkles add an extra pop!
