Melt the Candy Melts
Work with one color at a time for best results.
Place ½ cup of candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or tall narrow container.
Microwave at 50% power in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each round.
Continue until the candy is melted and smooth.
If the candy is too thick, stir in about 1 teaspoon of solid vegetable shortening (not water!) to loosen it up.
Tip: To keep candy melts smooth while working, keep unused portions covered or warm on a warming tray.
Dip the Pretzels
Dip each pretzel rod about halfway into the melted candy. Tilt the container and use a spoon if needed to fully coat.
Gently tap the pretzel on the edge of the bowl to remove excess candy and smooth the coating.
Place the dipped pretzel on your prepared baking sheet.
Optional: Once the coating is set, drizzle a contrasting color of melted candy over the rods using a fork, piping bag, or squeeze bottle for a pro finish.
Decorate with Sprinkles
Immediately after dipping, add the patriotic sprinkles while the candy is still wet.
For fuller coverage, roll the coated part of the pretzel in a shallow bowl of sprinkles instead of sprinkling by hand.
You can mix different sprinkle shapes and sizes for extra texture and visual flair.
Let Them Set
Let pretzels harden at room temperature for 15–30 minutes.
If you're in a hurry, pop the tray in the fridge for about 10 minutes, but don’t leave them too long - condensation can form and affect the texture.
Don’t stack the pretzels until they’re fully set to avoid smudging or sticking.
Storage tips:
- Once set, store your pretzel rods in an airtight container at room temperature.
- Avoid long-term refrigeration, as moisture can soften the pretzels and make the candy coating sweat.
- These are best enjoyed within a few days for peak freshness and crunch.
Extra tips:
- Use high-quality candy melts for smoother texture and better taste.
- You can add flavor extracts (like peppermint or almond) to the melts for a tasty twist - just make sure they're oil-based so the candy doesn’t seize.
- Melt small batches of candy if you’re decorating slowly, or keep your melts warm on a low-temp warming tray.
