Let’s get into it!

What You’ll Need
Equipment:
- Small bowls (for coloring frosting)
- Spatula or small spoon
- Disposable piping bags — or sturdy zip-top bags if that’s what you have
- 4B piping tip, or any open star tip you love
- Small rubber bands or twist ties (to secure piping bags)
- Cutting board or serving tray
- Damp paper towel or non-slip mat (to keep your board from sliding)
- Optional: small bowls or ramekins for loose snacks
Ingredients:
- 6 oz buttercream frosting (let it come to room temperature first)
- Red food gel color (this one works well)
- Navy blue food gel color (this one works well)
- Chex Mix
- Shortbread cookies
- Pretzels
- Popcorn
- Strawberries (rinsed and dried thoroughly)
- Graham crackers
- Chocolate bars
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles (mixed)
Optional add-ins: themed candies, nuts, or dried fruit

How to Make Your Patriotic Snack Board
Step 1: Split and Color Your Frosting
Spoon your room-temp buttercream into three small bowls – try to keep the amounts roughly equal, but it’s okay to put a little extra in the bowl that’ll stay white.
In one bowl, mix in 3–5 drops of red food gel. In another, do the same with the blue. Start with fewer drops and stir well before adding more. A small whisk or hand mixer works wonders for getting a smooth, vibrant color.

Step 2: Prep the Piping Bags
If you’re using a piping tip, snip the corner of one piping bag just enough so the tip fits halfway through – test it as you go so the hole doesn’t get too big. Then, tuck the red frosting bag inside and pull the tip of it through the piping tip opening. Cut the inner bag right where the tip starts.
Repeat this with the white and blue frosting bags, using the same outer piping bag (just clean the tip between colors). A little bowl of warm water works way better than a paper towel for rinsing.
Pro tip: fold the tops of the bags over your hand or a tall glass while filling to keep things neat.

Step 3: Create the Frosting Trail
Grab your board and secure it with a silicone mat or a damp paper towel underneath. Start with the red frosting and pipe a bold squiggle across the board. Let it sit for 10–15 seconds, then trace along the inside of the red line with the white frosting – make this line thicker by layering it twice.
Swap in the blue frosting and create a third line inside or alongside the others. Don’t stress about perfection – it’s supposed to look fun and freeform!
You can also add some little frosting dots or stars in the corners using a toothpick for extra detail.

Step 4: Build the Snack Spread
Start with heavier items like graham crackers and chocolate bars to give you a stable base. Then fill in around the frosting trail with pretzels, shortbread cookies, popcorn, and Chex mix. Small bowls work great for holding loose snacks and keeping your board looking tidy.
Next, place your strawberries inside the frosting trail. Try slicing a few in half for easier placement and a pop of visual variety.
Sprinkle on your red, white, and blue mix lightly at first, then add more until you’re happy with how it looks.

Optional: Chill Before Serving
Pop the whole board into the fridge for 10–15 minutes. This helps set the frosting and keeps everything looking fresh until you’re ready to serve.

Make-Ahead Tips
If you’re making this ahead, you can prep and color the frosting a day before. Just store each color in its own airtight container in the fridge, then bring them to room temp and give them a good stir before piping.
You can also slice the strawberries and pre-portion your snacks in little containers so assembly is even faster.
Serving Suggestions
Set out some small tongs or toothpicks so guests can grab their favorite treats easily and hygienically. And don’t forget to snap a photo—this board is made for sharing (online and off).
Customize It
This board is super adaptable! Switch up the colors for different holidays (pastels for Easter, black and orange for Halloween), or use themed candies for a birthday version. The frosting trail trick works year-round.

Whether you’re hosting a backyard bash or just want to make the holiday feel extra special, this Patriotic Charcuterie Board is a sweet and salty showstopper. It’s easy, eye-catching, and totally delicious – and once you try it, you’ll want to make a version for every celebration.
